Chargers Split 4 Games vs. Triton, John A. Logan in Opening Weekend

The Carl Sandburg College baseball team opened its season by splitting a pair of contests both Saturday and Sunday.
The Chargers (2-2) fell to John A. Logan, the 13th-ranked team in Division I, 10-7 in their season opener Saturday before rallying to knock off Triton 10-8. On Sunday, Sandburg beat Triton 11-8 before ending the weekend with a 13-3 loss to undefeated John A. Logan.

Key Moment
Sandburg put up a seven-run fifth to go ahead 7-3, but the Volunteers answered with a five-run bottom of the inning to go back ahead. Ryan Ritter’s, two-out, two-run single in the fifth proved to be the game-winner.
Sandburg Standout
Sophomore Wynn Takacs (Tipton, Ind./Taylor) reached base in all four plate appearances, scored a run and drove in a run. The second baseman doubled and drew three walks.

Key Moment
Trailing 8-6 in the fifth, Sandburg tied the game on a run-scoring error that was followed by an RBI groundout from Collinson. Caileb Johnson (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) double with one out in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run two batters later on a single to right from Koy Smith (Revere, Mo./Canton).
Sandburg Standout
Sophomore Tyler Baysingar (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) kept the Trojans scoreless and hitless over the final 3.1 innings in relief to earn the victory. The sophomore righthander struck out two, walked one while needing just 36 pitches to get the final 10 outs.

Key Moment
A six-run sixth opened up an 11-4 lead for the Chargers. The two big blows were a two-run double by Johnson, followed by a three-run home run to center by Hunter Darst (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) for his second blast of the game.
Sandburg Standout
Darst went 3 for 3 two homers, a walk, three runs scored and four RBIs. The sophomore catcher’s shot to center in the fourth got the Chargers on the board.

Jones singled in both of his at-bats and knocked in two runs as the only Charger with multiple hits.
